Americans love to eat. Americans love to watch TV. Americans love to use electronics - computers, I-phones, gaming systems. Employers love to pay health insurance claims for unhealthy employees...no, wait. I don't think they do!
If you own a business with employees and they are unhealthy due to the typical American diet of fast food and lack of activity, they are presenting you with financial burdens. If they are unhealthy, they may not come to work every day, or, they may be at work but not feeling well enough to do their job effectively or efficiently (that's called presenteeism). Their risk for job injury can also increase. When employee productivity declines, so can your profits.
To a small or mid-size employer, employee disability due to a job injury can be devastating to fulfillment of business obligations, in addition to insurance costs. Small businesses (fewer than 500 employees) across the United States are implementing wellness programs and are seeing a savings of up to $1.65 in health care costs for every dollar invested in a workplace wellness program (2008 JOEM study). Make the decision to make your workplace a healthy and productive one. Your bottom line (and your employee's bottoms) will be all the better for it!
