Employee engagement is defined in many ways, but the bottom line is engaged employees are coming to work every day bringing their A game. They are doing more than just the minimum to get the job done. They feel valued and want to make a contribution.
What is the secret to attaining, and more importantly to maintaining, an engaged workforce? Many books have been written on this subject. While I have read only a few, I have noticed a few common themes. Employees:
- Want to know what they do matters
- Want the opportunity to make suggestions
- Want opportunities for professional growth
- Want to have a sense that managers and leaders care about them
- Want to know that the CEO and senior management of the company are making decisions in the best interest of the organization and the employees, and most importantly
- Want to be communicated with
Easy stuff, right? Maybe not, but it starts an awareness of the importance of employee engagement. If senior leaders are talking about it and looking for opportunities to communicate with employees, solicit input and develop relationships of trust with employees, the foundation can be laid and built upon.
