Is Open Enrollment Important?

Our lives are busy. For many of us, we’re taking care of our families and working full-time jobs. Sometimes it’s all we can do to work all day, fix dinner at night and work on homework before going to bed so we can start the cycle all over again. So the question above seems rather taxing with all of the other responsibilities we have. Open Enrollment? Do I care?

I am of the opinion that Open Enrollment is important. It is the annual time of year that most employers allow their employees to change their benefits, without regard to a Family Status Change. It is your opportunity to compare the benefits you are offered to the benefits your family may need and change your annual elections based on this information. Did you buy a house? You may need additional life insurance coverage. Did you get married? Divorced? You should look at beneficiary information and make sure it’s correct. Did your spouse get a job with coverage not previously available? Often-times it is less expensive for each working spouse to take their own employer-sponsored coverage.

Yes, we’re busy and insurance isn’t easy. However, taking the time to review your options and make the best choices for your family is important, too and can save a lot of money and frustration if done right. It could mean the world of difference to your family in 2011.
